Respondus LockDown Browser

Use this guide when your instructor requires Respondus for a test. Get set up before test day.

What does my test require?

LockDown Browser restricts access to other websites and applications during a test. Respondus Monitor adds recording requirements, such as a webcam check. Webcam recording is not required for every LockDown Browser test.

Read your instructor’s directions to see what applies. Ask about any equipment or access concerns before test day.

Get set up before test day
  1. Use the correct installation route. Follow your course’s installation directions. Respondus downloads are institution-specific; ask your instructor or OCTC IT if you cannot find the correct link.
  2. Check your device. Review the Respondus resources and system requirements (opens in a new tab). Confirm any course-specific requirements with your instructor.
  3. Try a practice quiz. If your instructor provides one, complete it on the computer and connection you plan to use. Check the camera and microphone if required.

On a high school-issued device, installation or access may require permission from your school’s IT team. Read Chromebook Tips (opens in a new tab) for more help.

Start a test in Blackboard Ultra

When you are ready, save your work and close other programs. Sign into Blackboard using your regular browser and go to the test. Follow the prompts to install or launch LockDown Browser, then complete any required startup checks.

For the full walkthrough, use the Blackboard Ultra Student Quick Start Guide (PDF) (opens in a new tab).

Something is not working

Note the error message and when it appeared. Tell your instructor promptly if it affects an attempt or deadline. Share the course, test name, device, and what you already tried with support.

Capture an error screenshot if possible and permitted; avoid including test questions or answers. Never send your password.

Open Respondus Student Help (opens in a new tab) for troubleshooting and support options.

If you need another computer, ask OCTC IT about campus labs and required software. Confirm testing arrangements with your instructor before relying on a lab.
