Start Here Checklist

Review Start Here from a student’s point of view. Use these prompts to plan a new module or refresh an existing one.

Web links open in a new tab.

Start Here is a home base for orientation and learner support. It can address many Category 4 standards by making navigation, contact information, policies, help, and feedback routes easy to find. Keep that guidance available throughout the course.

A planning aid for best practices. Use alongside the current KCTCS Essential Standards (KES), college requirements, and your course expectations. Prompts marked KES connection identify standards addressed by that work; prompts marked Best practice are additional recommendations. A connection is not a finding that the standard is met. This module checklist does not replace a review of the whole course.

Checks are saved in this browser when browser storage is available. They are not submitted or shared.

Course Questions & Feedback

Have a question about how this course works? Notice a confusing direction, a link that does not work, or something that would make the course easier to navigate? Post it here. You can also share what is helping you learn.

Check back for responses, and feel free to help classmates when you can. For personal concerns, grades, accommodations, or anything you would rather discuss privately, contact me directly.

If an issue affects an upcoming deadline, contact me directly as soon as possible—ideally before it is due. Do not rely on a forum post for an urgent issue.

Use a course-generic feedback survey

The optional Student Course Feedback Survey uses nine reusable questions about course design, technology, and the learning experience. Use it during the course while there is time to respond to concerns, and offer a feedback opportunity after completion as well.

Adapt the prompts below to your Blackboard survey. Confirm its response settings before telling students whether responses are anonymous.

Suggested survey introduction

Your feedback helps me understand what is working and what could be clearer. Share your thoughts about the course organization, technology, and learning experience. For urgent help or a deadline concern, contact me directly rather than waiting for this survey to be reviewed.

Course design

  1. How clear are the course objectives and expectations? Scale: 1 (Not Clear at All) to 4 (Very Clear).
  2. Is the course content organized in a way that is easy to navigate and understand? True or False.
  3. What improvements would you suggest to the course layout or organization?

Technology

  1. How would you rate your overall experience with Blackboard Ultra? Scale: 1 (Poor) to 4 (Excellent).
  2. What additional technologies or tools might enhance your learning experience?
  3. Have you encountered technical difficulties in Blackboard Ultra? If so, describe them.

General feedback

  1. What aspects of the course have been most beneficial to your learning?
  2. What aspects have been challenging, or where would you like more support?
  3. What other comments or suggestions do you have for improving the course?

Adapted from Stephanie Self’s optional Student Course Feedback Survey. These prompts are a text reference, not a Blackboard survey import file.

Review the forum and survey responses regularly. Acknowledge useful feedback and explain changes—or why a requested change is not possible.

Before students arrive

Carry the guidance into each module

Module overviews are the recommended home for KES 1.1, 1.8, and 1.9. Start Here introduces the overall course; each module overview should make the learning path clear for that unit.

Choose resources to support the module

Copy student resource links and embed codes (opens in a new tab) and place help beside the tasks where it will be useful.

KES reference: KCTCS Essential Standards Quick Checklist supplied for this project. Some standards concern the full course, including assessment frequency and variety; reviewing Start Here alone cannot establish that those standards are met.
