Mile Marker #11: My Community Impact

The assignment, with support, and a form you can fill in and save.

About 20 minutes 6 of 7 in this module

Your community is bigger than you think, and you're already part of how it works.

This module asked you to notice the communities you're already part of, and to look at how each one works, including where you have influence. This Mile Marker asks you to put that noticing into words, then name the four skills your STAR(T) Stories will show.

Keep it short and honest. You're not writing a report on your community involvement. You're capturing what you started thinking through in this module, so you can carry it forward.

AI use: AI-supported

You may use AI to ask you questions that help you get more specific. Your final responses must be in your own words. AI doesn't know your community. You do.

See the AI Course Policy in the syllabus. Want a place to start? Try the optional AI thinking partner prompt.

Where to submit

Submit your responses in the Mile Marker #11 assignment in Blackboard. Check Blackboard for the due date.

Want help keeping it organized? The fill-in form at the bottom of this page saves your answers as a PDF named "Mile Marker #11" that you can upload to the assignment. Your Community Snapshot has most of what you need for Questions 1 through 3.

Prefer paper? A printable handout for this Mile Marker is with the assignment in Blackboard. Fill it in by hand, then upload a photo or scan.

Part I: Your community impact

Question 1

Where You Show Up

Think back to the community you worked with in this module, or pick another one if it fits better now. Name it, and describe your role in it. How do you already show up or contribute, even in small, everyday ways?

Example: "My job. I work the front desk at a campus office. I'm usually the first person someone talks to, so I try to make sure people feel heard even when I can't fix their problem myself."

Community word bank: family · friends · roommates · classmates · coworkers · neighbors · online groups or gaming communities · faith or cultural groups · customer service or caregiving roles · teams, clubs, or interest groups

A strong answer

Names one real community, describes your role, and gives a specific example of how you already show up.

Question 2

Your Influence, Named

Using what you practiced in this module (noticing the people, rules, and influence in a system), describe one specific way you've made, or could make, a positive difference in that community. It doesn't have to be big. Small and real is exactly right.

Example: "I noticed new students at the front desk often don't know they can ask for a callback instead of waiting on hold. I started mentioning it. It's a small thing, but it's saved people a lot of frustration."

Impact word bank: being reliable · supporting others · encouraging someone · helping someone understand something · practicing patience · speaking up in discussions · leading in small ways · being a good roommate · showing up consistently · noticing what others miss

A strong answer

Describes one specific action and the difference it makes, connected to something you noticed about how the community works.

Question 3

Looking Ahead

As your circles grow (new classes, jobs, programs, organizations), what's one way you want to show up more intentionally?

  • Connect it to a strength or value you identified in Module 7.
  • Name one realistic first step you could take.

Example: "I want to actually join something instead of just attending, probably something connected to my program. I value being useful to people, so I'd want it to be something where that matters. First step: ask my program advisor which student groups are active."

A strong answer

Names one intention, connects it to a specific strength or value, and names a first step you could take.

Part II: Your four STAR(T) skills

Question 4

Choose Your Stories

Look back through your Mile Markers and your life this semester. For each of your four STAR(T) skills, name the experience you plan to tell, in a phrase or a sentence.

  • Adaptability & Leadership (assigned)
  • Professionalism (assigned)
  • Knowledge Application (assigned)
  • Your choice: name the skill, your experience, and in two or three sentences, why you chose it.

Example: "Professionalism: the week my car broke down and I still got every assignment in by arranging rides and emailing my instructor ahead of time."

A strong answer

Names a real, specific experience for each skill, uses a different experience for each, and explains why you chose your fourth skill.

Optional: AI thinking partner

If you'd like help making your reflection more specific, try this prompt in Microsoft Copilot or another AI tool:

"I'm working on a short reflection about my community impact for a college course. Here's what I have so far for where I show up, how I make a difference, and how I want to grow that going forward: [paste your notes]. Can you ask me a few questions to help me make this more specific?"

Use what's useful, but your final response must be in your own words. Leave out your full name and other identifying details.

How it's scored

Mile Markers are scored on reflection, engagement, and effort, not perfection. Strong responses are honest and specific, with examples that are real and feel like yours, not generic statements that could apply to anyone.
