Part 4

What Makes a Strong Story

How stories are scored, and three fixes that move a story up.

About 5 minutes 4 of 8 in this guide

All four stories are scored the same way: on the story and its structure.

Recorded stories are never scored on delivery. Typed and recorded stories are held to the same standard. The table below shows that standard, and the fixes after it show how to move your story up a level.

How stories are scored

STAR(T) Stories scoring levels
LevelWhat it looks like
StrongAll five steps are clearly there. The Action uses "I" and describes specific decisions and behaviors. The Result names something concrete. The Transfer connects to a specific, named situation ahead. The story could only belong to you.
On TrackAll five steps are there and the story is real. The Action is mostly specific but may drift into "we." The Transfer shows real thinking but could be more specific.
DevelopingThe steps are there, but one or more is thin. The Action describes what happened in general. The Transfer is generic and doesn't name a real situation.
Needs RevisionSteps are named but not really developed. The Action doesn't show what you did. The Transfer is missing or vague.
No EvidenceNo submission, or no real use of the STAR(T) framework.

Three fixes that move a story up

Swap "we" for "I"

BeforeWe reorganized the schedule so everyone could make it.

AfterI asked each person for their work hours, built a new schedule around them, and sent it to the group that night.

Make the Result concrete

BeforeIt went really well.

AfterEveryone made the next three meetings, and we turned the project in a day early.

Name where the Transfer goes

BeforeThis will help me in my future career.

AfterIn clinicals next year I'll be coordinating with nurses on different shifts, and I now know to ask about everyone's constraints before I plan.

Submitting your stories

There are four separate STAR(T) Stories portals in Blackboard, one for each skill. You don't have to submit them all at once. Each portal is separate, so you can pace yourself. Check Blackboard for the due date.

  • I'm using the portal that matches the skill in my story.
  • My recording is about 2 to 4 minutes, or my typed story is in the submission box, not an uploaded document.
  • All five steps are there, in order.
  • For my choice story, I named my skill and why I chose it at the start.
  • It sounds like me, not a template and not AI.
AI and your stories

AI can help you brainstorm which experience to use, or ask you questions that help you remember details. It can't tell your story. Your stories have to be yours, in your own words and voice.
