AI Literacy Map

The five BE behaviors: where they're taught, practiced, and labeled.

About 8 minutes 4 of 6 in this guide

How FYE 100 builds AI literacy: five observable behaviors, taught in the lessons, practiced in AI Chats, and labeled on every assignment.

The course uses the BE framework, a student-facing, behavioral translation of the Digital Education Council (DEC) AI Literacy Framework used at the KCTCS system level. FYE 100 covers Tier 1 (Benchmark), which maps to DEC Level 1. The framing question across the course: How do students make intentional decisions about using AI while maintaining ownership of their learning?

No Mile Marker requires AI. The AI Chats are the course's graded AI practice, done in Blackboard's AI Conversation tool. Every behavior is framed around judgment, including the decision not to use AI.

The five BE behaviors

All five are introduced in Lesson 1.3 and Lesson 1.4. Be Safe and Be Honest are baseline expectations from Module 1 on. Be Critical, Be Responsible, and Be Reflective recur as course anchors.

BE behaviors, what they mean at Tier 1, and the DEC dimension each translates
BehaviorWhat it means at Tier 1DEC dimension: Level 1
BE SafeRecognize AI-generated content and understand basic risks of sharing personal or sensitive information with AI tools.Understanding AI and Data: AI and Data Awareness
BE HonestDisclose AI use when required; understand the difference between AI assistance and your own work.Ethical and Responsible Use: Understand Risks
BE CriticalEvaluate AI output: verify information, identify bias, and assess accuracy before using it.Critical Thinking and Judgement: Question AI Output
BE ResponsibleMake intentional decisions about when and how to use AI to support your learning, not replace your thinking.Ethical and Responsible Use: Understand Risks
BE ReflectiveNotice how AI use affects your learning process and growth.Human-Centricity, EI, and Creativity: Awareness of Human-AI Interaction

DEC Dimension 5, Domain Expertise, is intentionally out of scope for FYE 100. It belongs to Tier 2 program courses.

AI Literacy boxes in the lessons

Lessons carry short AI Literacy boxes that apply the module's topic to AI, tagged with the behavior they build. This list updates as modules are added.

Blackboard AI Chats

Four modules include an AI Chat with Coach Pathfinder in Blackboard. The chats in Modules 2, 8, and 9 are Socratic: Coach Pathfinder asks questions instead of giving answers, so the thinking stays with the student. The Module 4 chat is a role-play: the student works through a scenario with Coach Pathfinder and does the evaluation themselves.

If a student has a concern about the AI Chats

Students are told to talk with their instructor if they have a concern about using the AI Chats, such as an accommodation, a privacy objection, or discomfort with AI. Each AI Chat has a backup journal in Blackboard for this. Keep the journal hidden, and release it only to that student with a release condition set to that member. Don't open it to the whole class. The journal replaces the AI practice the chat is built for, so it's an exception, not a second option.

AI use labels on assignments

Students learn three AI use labels in Lesson 1.4: No AI, AI-supported, and AI-integrated. Labels are set assignment by assignment, and every Mile Marker in the book carries one.

Students also have the AI Literacy page in OCTC Student Resources (opens in a new tab), linked from Lesson 1.4. It uses the same wording as this book, and its detail pages are linked from Lessons 1.4 and 4.3.
